Taiwan Pirate Copy, 1961. The copyright page reads "COPYRIGHT 1955, 1961 BY JOSEPH HELLER", with eight lines of Chinese characters at bottom. Hardcover (approx 5.5 x 7.5 inches (14 x 19.5 cm)), 443 pages. The book is in Very Good condition. Red cloth boards with silver lettering on spine. The boards are lightly bumped. Pages browning/foxing. There is a hole (approx 1/4 x 1/2 inches) on a single blank page (there are two in addition to the rear endpaper) at the rear of the book. There is a small black mark on top page edge. The dust jacket (dj) is in Fair condition. Browning/foxing, and is bumped and chipped along the edges. One large v-shaped piece (approx 1.5 x 1.5 inches) missing from front (center, affecting text). Small pieces (chips) missing at head/foot of spine and corners. There is an approximate 2 inch closed tear on rear near the spine. Creasing along edges and rear corner. Dj design by Paul Bacon. The dj is not price-clipped, shows original price of $5.95. The dust jacket is protected in an archival (removable) book jacket cover. Additional photos available upon request. Weight 385g.
Synopsis
Catch-22 is Joseph Heller’s first novel and his most acclaimed work. Set during World War II, the novel uses a distinctive non-chronological third-person omniscient narration, mainly focusing on the life of Captain John Yossarian, a U.S. Army Air Forces B-25 bombardier. Occasionally, the narrator also shows us how other characters, such as the chaplain or Hungry Joe, experience the world around them. As the novel’s events are described from the different points of view through separate out-of-sequence storylines, the timeline of Catch-22 develops along with the plot. The novel's title refers to a plot device that is repeatedly invoked in the story. Catch-22 starts as a set of paradoxical requirements whereby airmen mentally unfit to fly did not have to, but could not actually be excused. By the end of the novel, the phrase is invoked as the explanation for many unreasonable restrictions. “Catch-22” has since entered the English language and can be understood as an unsolvable logic puzzle, a difficult situation from which there is no escape. Upon publication, the book was not a best seller in the United States. It was merely a cult favorite until the publication of the paperback edition in 1962, which set record sales — most likely benefitting from a national debate about the pointlessness of the Vietnam War. Catch-22 has since been ranked as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century by the Modern Library, one of the 20th century's top 100 novels by the Radcliffe Publishing Course, and one of the 100 greatest novels of all time by The Observer.

Shipping charges are for the final weight of the parcel (book size/weight plus packaging materials).

The shipping charges quoted for Priority Mail (Medium Flat Rate Box) are for a parcel measuring 13-5/8" x 11-7/8" x 3-3/8" or 11" x 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" and less than two (2) pounds (lbs). Larger and or heavier parcels may require additional postage charges. You will be notified via email if additional charges are warranted at which point you can elect to accept or reject the extra charges requested. However, smaller parcels may be subjected to lower postage costs (reduction will occur when order is processed).
For International Customers: I encourage you to contact me via email to obtain an accurate postage quote prior to making your purchase as United States Postal Service (USPS) shipping costs vary considerably depending on buyer's location and parcel weight and size. Overseas orders are normally dispatched via USPS First-Class Package International Service. The amount quoted for shipping is based on USPS rates for a parcel weighing less than two (2) pounds (lbs) and ultimate destination. Requests for Priority (Express) shipping will be handled on a case-by-case basis as such charges are extremely expensive to most international destinations.
