London: Smith, Elder and co, 1866. First edition, complete in two hardback volumes. 8vo (23cm by 14cm), xvi, 543pp; xv, 643pp. Original brown cloth, gilt titling to the spines. Please note that the inner hinges of both volumes have been crudely strengthened with brown tape, and there is a bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Otherwise, this set is in sound condition. Suitable as a reading, working or reference set. From the library of art historian and professor Sir Lawrence Gowing.
