About This Item

New York: Leon Amiel / Israel: Steimatzky Ltd, (1983)., (1983).. Very good. - Quarto, 12 inches high by 9-1/2 inches wide. Hardcover, bound in blue cloth titled in gilt on the spine, in a pictorial dust wrapper featuring a color illustration by Chagall on the front and back panels. The covers are bumped and lightly rubbed along the edges. 192 pages, with 50 full-page color illustrations after paintings by Chagall and an original color lithograph bound in the front of the book. A previous owner's inscription is penned on the front endpaper. Very good.

"Illustrated with over 90 remarkable plates, 50 in radiant color. This lovely volume tells and shows how Chagall rose to the challenge of transforming the blank walls and floors of the State Reception Hall of the Knesset and produced some of the most beautiful original works in modern art. Chagall also envisioned the synagogue of the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center as 'a crown offered to the Jewish Queen,' the windows as jewels of translucent fire." - from the dust wrapper copy.
