The work of English politician, philosopher and writer Anthony Ashley-Cooper.First published in 1711, the Oxford DNB states that this work conveys a 'notion of philosophy as a form of ethical training', and that it contributed to contemporary philosophical and social thinking.Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece to volume I, and with a small number of further head and tail pieces.His work examines ethics, religion and aesthetics, including essays titled 'An Essay on the Freedom of Wit and Humour', 'Inquiry Concerning Virtue and Merit', and 'The Moralists'. ESTC reference number T144565The colophon to the rear of volume III provides the printer's name. In full calf bindings, with gilt detailing to back strips. Discolouration to back strips, with volume I lacking title label. Volume I rebacked, with joints still starting, but firmly held. Front joint of volume II, rear joint of volume III, head of front joint of volume III and head of rear joint of volume II starting, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean, with only the odd spot. Very Good
