About This Item

Toronto, ON, Canada: Key Porter Books, 2009. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Inscribed by Author(s). 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Inscribed by Author upon the title-page, 'Best wishes to Harrie, from Beryl Young.' Very little to no wear. Quite clean. 'The story of 90,000 British children who came to Canada as child immigrants between 1870 and 1938 is not well known. Yet the descendants of these 'home children' number more than four million in Canada today. The author is one of them: Charlie was her father. Charlie was thirteen when his shopkeeper father died in 1910. His mother, Sarah, had no money to care for her seven children, and before long, Charlie was sent to a Dr. Barnardo's Home in London. In 1911, as part of Barnardo's overseas program, Charlie sailed to Canada and was sent to work on an Ontario farm.' Illustrated. 111 pages. Oblong, 8.5 x 8.25 inches..
