About This Item
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1958. First American edition. Hardcover. Scratch on front cover, else near fine/slightly frayed. 8vo. Cloth-backed boards. Pp. (vi), 282. Originally published by René Julliard (Paris: 1957) as "Tanguy: Histoire d'un enfant d'aujourd'hui". Translated from the French by Peter Green. Michel del Castillo was born in Madrid in 1933, his father a French conservative and his mother a Spanish republican journalist. When the Spanish Civil War broke out he and his mother were interned at a camp in the Lozère region. Later he was arrested by the Nazis and sent to a concentration camp in Germany where he only just managed to survive. After the War he was repatriated to Paris but then sent back to Spain and placed in an orphanage from which he escaped. Eventually he made his way back to Paris and became a student at the Sorbonne.
