Translated from the French by Peter Green. Michel del Castillo was born in Madrid in 1933, his father a French conservative and his mother a Spanish republican journalist. When the Spanish Civil War broke out he and his mother were interned at a camp in the Lozère region. Later he was arrested by the Nazis and sent to a concentration camp in Germany where he only just managed to survive. After the War he was repatriated to Paris but then sent back to Spain and placed in an orphanage from which he escaped. Eventually he made his way back to Paris and became a student at the Sorbonne.

Included for instance is a photograph of Robert Anthelme who was the husband of the author who wrote under the name Marguerite Duras. Also is a note from him written at Buchenwald on May 1st, 1945, two days after the camp was liberated.

The trial of Robert Brasillach was—and remains—a cause célèbre in France. He was charged not for what he did during the German Occupation but for what he wrote.
