About This Item

Chicago: Field Museum of Natural History, 1925. Anthropology Design Series No.3. One of the earliest publications on the art of the Chinese basket, with particular focus on the basketry products of south China, where the craft developed to new heights of elegance, variety of design and sophisticated technique. The author illustrates baskets for a wide variety of functions - for flower gathering, for containment of personal items during travel, for picnics, for teapots, to be used as pillows, to name a few. Aside from intricate woven designs, there are baskets decorated with red and black lacquer or with motifs in raised and gilded relief. The plates are reproduced with brilliant clarity in what appears possibly to be sepia tones - aside from the subject matter, the portfolio provides a beautiful example of early 20th century printing. 4 pp; 38 images with detailed captions, each reproduced on one side of a loose leaf, all held within a folder inside of a slipcase.. First Edition. Soft Cover. Fine/Fine. 31 x 23 cm..
