An important work on China by a member of Lord Amherst’s embassy, and later, Chief Superintendent of China for over twenty years. Davis became proficient in the Chinese language and thoroughly acquainted with Chinese culture and history. Included in the work is a four-page bibliography of miscellaneous works published on China.
