About This Item

8vo, red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, many pages unopened, 7 maps, many pages unopened, 296 pp. Ex-library copy with rubberstamp and perforated markings on title page, card pocket removed from rear endpapers, small spine label, some pencil markings, hinges cracking, light edge wear and some spotting to cloth; otherwise very good. Christopher Gist (1705-1759) was an explorer, surveyor, and Indian agent that played an important role in opening up southern Ohio. He also served in the military during the French and Indian War, and was part of George Washington's expedition to get the French out of the Ohio region. He appears to have had some success negotiating with the Indians, and even persuading some to help the English against the French. Gist is perhaps best known for the surveying he did of the Ohio region, including the Ohio River area around Pittsburg to Louisville, Kentucky. Gist actually gave the English the first detailed account of southern Ohio and northeastern Kentucky, which was more than 15 years before the famed frontiersman Daniel Boone entered the territory.
