In the original French.A vibrantly illustrated Limited Edition of French Romantic writer Prosper Merimee's historical novel set in the French court in the mid sixteenth century, at the time of the St. Bartholomew massacre.Beautifully bound in half crushed morocco, and with publisher's original paper wraps and back strip bound in to the front and rear of the work. Of only 410 copies produced, this volume is no. 152, one of 125 copies printed with a suite of fifteen plates in black and white to the rear.Illustrated with fifteen colour lithograph plates by French artist Guy Arnoux, alongside the further fifteen plates to the rear. Collated, complete.Best known for the novella 'Carmen', this is a stunning edition of Merimee's historical novel, first published in 1828. In a half crushed morocco binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Minor fading to back strip. Otherwise, externally fine. The odd spot to fore edge of text block. With publisher's original paper wraps and back strip bound in to the front and rear of the work. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean, with the odd area of more significant spotting to page perimeters towards centre of text block. Near Fine
