About This Item

1950. London: Faber and Faber, 1949 8vo. Publisher's green cloth, spine lettered in gilt; in the original dust-wrapper printed in red and black (not price-clipped); pp. [vi], 7-167, [4]; light sunning to top edge of cloth, as well as top edge and spine of wrapper; a few light spots to lower panel of wrapper; slight discoloration to half-title; else a very good copy. First edition, with misprint "here" for "her" on line 1 of p.29 (believed to be one of only a few hundred out of the total of 19,950 copies issued with this misprint). A witty comedy of keeping up appearances in a West End drawing room, including, of course, interjections of Eliot's view of the bleak hollowness of materialism which haunts post-war Britain. Gallup, Eliot, A55a.

Synopsis

A modern verse play about the search for meaning, in which a psychiatrist is the catalyst for the action. “An authentic modern masterpiece” (New York Post). “Eliot really does portray real-seeming characters. He cuts down his poetic effects to the minimum, and then finally rewards us with most beautiful poetry” (Stephen Spender).
