George Chaworth Musters (1841-1879) "The King of Patagonia" led a remarkable life. Born in Naples, he was orphaned by the age of four, and brought up by his uncle Hammond who had sailed with Fitzroy aboard "The Beagle". He lived and travelled throughout South America, and was recognised by the RGS for his contributions to the geographical knowledge of the continent.
His wife Mary is the ' Mary ' of Byron's poem, 'The Dream.'

I. Riley and Co, New York, 1806. Volumes 1 & 2 (of 3) Hardcover in the original calfskin binding with leather spine labels (titles in gilt largely faded.) "Translated by an American Gentleman," Washington Irving, and this happens to be his first book. Illustrated with a large (26-1/2" x 17-3/4") folded map in the first volume - the map has been repaired (please see photos) in the upper right hands corner. The binding is sound on these antique books - the pages are age toned but in good condition, with foxing heavier in Vol 2 (particularly at the front of the book) than 1. The boards of Vol. 2 are slightly bowed and there's a fair amount of quill pen names and notes in the front and back of that volume.

Paris: Chez Audibert, 1814. 1st Edition . Leather Bound. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo. xii, 334 pages. Hardcover bound in quarter leather with blue patterned paper-covered boards. Binding is rubbed and bumped with some scuffing on the boards. Hinges are secure. All edges marbled. Several pencil markings as well as a small library ink stamp on the title page. A piece of paper was laid between the title page and the Preface page, resulting in heavy browning on the Preface. The browning also affect the title page and a few pages after. The text is toned with occasional foxing. Text is in French. The title translates to "Of the Colonies and Particularly that of Saint-Domingue; Historical and Political Memory."

Hardcover bound in quarter brown morocco and brown and yellow speckled paper-covered boards. Five raised bands and six compartments on the spine adorned with gilt designs. Light to moderate rubbing and wear to the binding. The leather on the spine has some scuffs. A sound copy with secure hinges. Marbled endpapers and the front flyleaf has a mid-20th century owner's bookplate. Interior toned. Contains a frontis portrait. Text is in French. Guy Joseph Bonnet (1773-1843) was a Haitian historian and General of the Army of the Republic of Haiti. he was one of the signers of the Haitian Act of Independence (1804) when Haiti overthrew French rule. No auction records found. Scarce. We've been unable to find any other copy listed online, and the last copy seen in published auctions records is from 1901.

Vellum boards with Yapp style fore-edges and typical vellum warp. Interior has modern stamp (R151) on interior front pastedown, ffep with pencil notation and older ink info, title page with old library stamp, prior ownership inscription dated 1699, half title has pencil note at bottom. No other interior markings or problems. Quite decent old paper remains supple. Paginates: [24], map, 480, [12] with original blanks. This is a small format book (12 mo) approximately 12.5 x 7 cm.
