About This Item

(Köln-Deutz: Zentraler Notgeld Verschleiss; distributed in the Netherlands by Firma Joseph Lieban” (The Hague, ca. 1924). 4to. 32 x 21cm. Original album with about 380 actual Notgeld bills. These are works of graphic art, printed as original lithographs or woodcuts...Joseph Lieban ( Krakow , August 13, 1905 - ?) was a Jewish merchant in The Hague , with a branch at Haagschestraat 5. From 1914 to 1940, Lieban traded in German emergency money , emergency coins and emergency stamps . Lieban was the largest dealer in emergency money and the main promoter of its collection.... Lieban presented himself as the official trader of German emergency money. Lieban released compilation albums under the names "Deutschland Zentraler Notgeld Vertrieb" and "Central depot of emergency-money". The albums were packed in golden yellow colored rough cardboard boxes with matching lid. Luxury albums were released, but also simple ones for the widest possible audience. Lieban concentrated his sales on the Netherlands, Belgium and the United States, where collecting emergency money became extremely popular. In the Lieban albums one usually finds so-called serienscheine (fantasy money, increasing to 1 mark), furthermore inflation notes of cities, banks or factories. In the more luxurious albums, we also find examples of emergency coins and (emergency) stamps. Lieban bought whole runs and remnants of emergency money notes from bankrupt printers. Those batches also contained entire printed sheets, which were cut to the size of the emergency money book. These printed sheets, cut to size, can be found in various Lieban albums. Even well past the inflation period in Germany from 1918 to 1924, Lieban released albums. Lieban has also had flyers printed to promote his wares. The presumably last one is dated April 1929. The Lieban albums have become a household name and can still be found at many European auctions.
