About This Item
New York: Taylor & Dodd, 1840, 1840. First edition. Sabin 39863; American Imprints 40-3934. Some foxing; cloth a little faded and worn; very good copy.. 2 vols, 12mo, original blind-stamped purple cloth, gilt lettering. Writings from the combative radical Democrat and journalist William Leggett (1801-1839), who edited the Evening Post with William Cullen Bryant and championed and wrote extensively on abolition and free speech. This collection marked the first American attempt "to establish the standing of a writer on the basis of journalistic work" - DAB. Bryant, who held the copyright on this work, worked with Sedgwick on the editing. From the library of a friend of Bryant and probably Leggett, as well, New York author and journalist James Lawson (1799-1880), with his signature in penciil ("James Lawson / Yonkers") on each title-page. Lawson was a friend and collaborator with many New York writers of the period. See the DAB. This work often - but not always - contains a frontis portrait of Leggett. This copy does not.
