London: Printed for M.P. [Moses Pitt] and to be Sold by George Monke...and William Ewrey , 1688. Book. Very good+ condition. Hardcover. Early printing. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Two volumes and including the "Seraglio" text. Thought to be a 2nd printing of the first edition. Newly rebound in full caramel goatskin (leather) with a gold-embossed leather spine label; blind-tooled frames on front and rear covers. New endpapers. Measures just over 12 inches tall. Complete with 37 plates including 30 full page plates (a few are larger fold-outs), five in-text plates, and one large and one small folding map. Contains several additional smaller in-text illustrations. Each volume has multiple parts/sections. Vol. I, First Part with title dated 1688: [xiv], 264 pages of text including an index. Contains 9 illustrations including one fold-out. Vol. I, Second Part with title dated 1684: [vi], 214 pages including an index. There are 14 illustrations as called for but the plate titled "Portugal's Moscovy" is not present; instead there is an additional plate not called for at page 149 titled "A REPRESENTATION OF 24 ye FAIREST DIAMONDS..." which is a fold-out. Volume II, [first part] with separate title page dated 1684: [xx], 66 pages, [ii] of publisher's advertisement. Large folding map of Japan titled "A MAPP OF THE ISLES OF JAPON" which measures 20.75" x 14.25" is loosely inserted facing pg.1. Volume II, [second part] without a separate title page "RELATION OF THE KINGDOM OF TURQUIN": 87 pages, [i] blank, followed by [i] page indexing to the map of Japan, [i] blank]. Illustrated with 7 plates facing pages 14, 17, 23, 46, 47, 47, and 53. This part also contains six non-paginated leaves containing text describing certain plates in great detail. Volume II, [third part] without a separate title page "HISTORY OF THE LATE REVOLUTION OF THE DOMINIONS OF THE GREAT MOGUL": 154 pages followed by [ii] pages of publisher's advertisements. Facing page 1 is a folding map titled "THE EMPIRE OF THE GREAT MOGUL" which measures 9.75"w x 7.75"h. Bound with an additional section titled "A NEW RELATION OF THE INNER-PART OF THE GRAND SEIGNOR'S SERAGLIO..." with separate title page dated 1684: [vi], 113 pages of text. CONDITION REPORT: Three quarters of the text with a small stain confined to the fore-edge margin, and three plates with stains entering the image area. Additionally about 60 pages have minor staining to the bottom margin. Numerous plates have been expertly re-margined or have had torn corners filled in, and several minor tears have been repaired. A few plates were washed and/or cleaned and gently light-bleached. Several pages with minor creasing, and minimal staining, minor soiling and minor toning. Two pages with tiny holes with a few letters of loss, and one page with a printer's error with a corner folded up and printed upon. An attractive copy of this uncommon title. Title continues: "As also, a full relation of the five years wars, between Aureng-Zebe and his brothers in their father's life-time, about the succession. And a voyage made by the Great Mogul (Aureng-Zebe) with his army from Delhi to Lahor, from Lahor to Bember, and from thence to the kingdom of Kachemire, by the Mogols, call'd, the paradise of the Indies. Together with a relation of the Kingdom of Japan and Tunkin, and of their particular manner and trade. To which is added A new description of the Grand Seignior's seraglio, and also of all the kingdoms that encompass the Euxine ad Caspian Seas." Translated by J. Philips and Edmund Everard.
