In the original French.  Illustrated throughout by French artist Gaston Vuillier.Merimee's novel follows the tale of a young Corsican girl who pushes her brother to kill, in order to avenge their father's murder.It was adapted into a film, 'Vendetta', in 1950, produced by Howard Hughes.With the bookplate of Alfred Nathaniel Holden Curzon, 4th Baron Curzon, and his wife Blanche to the front pastedown. An inscription to a front endpaper is addressed to Alfred, dated 1909, signed H.I.E. In a quarter morocco binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Externally, very smart, with light rubbing to board perimeters and joints. Bookplate to front pastedown, with inscription to a front blank. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned, but clean and bright. Very Good

Synopsis

Dans les premiers jours du mois d'octobre 181., le colonel sir Thomas Nevil, Irlandais, officier distingue de l'armee anglaise, descendit avec sa fille a l'hotel Beauveau, a Marseille, au retour d'un voyage en Italie. L'admiration continue des voyageurs enthousiastes a produit une reaction, et, pour se singulariser, beaucoup de touristes aujourd'hui prennent pour devise le nil admirari d'Horace. C'est a cette classe de voyageurs mecontents qu'appartenait miss Lydia, fille unique du colonel.
