Binding of very clean and spotless brown full cloth with gilt outlined Colosseum on front, gilt titles on spine; square with sharp corners; tight and solid glued binding. Immaculate condition. Internals are pristine. Dust jacket is bright, clean, no edgewear, rubbed. Magnificently illustrated throughout with 100 illustrations, one half in full color, provide a stunning visual complement to the narrative. Modern photographs, especially commissioned for this volume, as well as paintings and sketches by famous artists, have been juxtaposed with views of classical sculpture and ancient frescoes, coins, and mosaics. A special section, The Colosseum in Literature, includes excerpts from such noted authors as Gibbon, Byron, Goethe, Shaw, Dickens, and Longfellow, all of whom were inspired by this vast amphitheater. Also included are a guide to the Eternal City's other celebrated archaeological monuments and a bibliography. A magnificent book.
