About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1883. Cloth. Good. 8" by 5.5". None. A charming household manual comprising a profuse number of Victorian recipes. This was an extremely popular work, first published in 1871 and eventually selling over one million copies and running a large number of editions. It was reprinted in French, German, Spanish and Arabic.Written by Mary Virginia Terhune (1830-1922) under the pseudonym Marion Harland. Terhune was a most prolific writer of both fiction and non-fiction works, with this work paving the way for her successful career in domestic writing.Contains chapters on blancmange, cleaning, eggs, game, gingerbread, jellies, the nursery, servants, soap, soups, preserves and brandied fruits, amongst many others. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally generally smart, a touch of rubbing to the head and tail of the spine resulting in slight discolouration and loss to the cloth. Internally generally firmly bound, with hinges straining but firm. Pages are a touch age toned but otherwise clean. Good
