A truly unique complete set of the works of William Makepeace Thackeray, lavishly illustrated. One of twenty five uniform sets prepared by G.P. Putnam's Sons. Very scarce Edition Unique of the works of William Makepeace Thackeray, complete in fifty-two royal octavo volumes in uniform full crushed morocco bindings. One of twenty-five sets prepared for sale, this set number six. Specially prepared and issued by G. P. Putnam's Sons of New York, from the Smith, Elders & Co. London edition. William Makepeace Thackeray was a famous English novelist known for his satirical works such as Vanity Fair, portrait of British Society, and The Luck of Barry Lyndon, later adapted for a Stanley Kubrick film. Illustrated with two-thousand, one hundred and seventy-five illustrations, of which four-hundred and three are full page plates (eighty in colour to Christmas Books). Collated, complete. Parts of the text such as introductions and illustrations in text were excised from the original Smith, Elder, & Co. edition and pasted to leaves as called for with this edition. Comprising the following titles:The Adventures of Phillip in four volumes;The Newcomes in four volumes;Pendennis in four volumes;The Virginians in four volumes;Barry Lyndon in two volumes;Vanity Fair in four volumes;Henry Esmond in two volumes;Hoggarty Diamond;The Book of Snobs;The Four Georges;Catherine;Memoirs of Mr CJ Yellowpush;Lovel the Widower; Denis Duval, etc.; Fitz-Boodle Papers, etc.;Men's Wives, etc.; The English Humourists; Burlesque in two volumes; Paris Sketchbook in two volumes; Irish Sketchbook in two volumes;Sketches and Travels in London; Cornhill to Cairo; Christmas Books in two volumes, with colourful plates; Miscellaneous Essays in two volumes; Roundabout Papers in two volumes;Contributions to Punch in two volumes;Ballads in two volumes. In uniform full crushed morocco bindings, titles in gilt to spine, decorative gilt tooling to front board and extremities, gilt to top edge, marbled endpapers. Externally generally smart with some shelf wear, light rubbing and occasional minor chipping to spine. Some rubbing to occasional board. Some loss to head and tail of spine, particularly vols. 1 Pendennis, vol. I Vanity Fair to head of spine. Rear board vol. I and front board vol. III 'The Virginians' detached but present. Rear board vol. I Vanity Fair held by cords only. Pages bright and clean with minor spotting only affecting odd leaf. Very Good Indeed
