About This Item

Rand, McNally & Company for Indian Refining Company, New York, (no date; circa 1917). Scarce pamphlet. Stapled wraps, printing on front cover, printing/illustrations on rear cover, 7 x 5 3/4 inches, 31 pp., b/w drawings and photo illustrations, multi-colered maps, index to maps. Very good (chief defect is a crease in the covers and text, running vertically, near the middle of the pamphlet). Interesting Indian Refining/Havoline Oil advertisement and World War I history. The captions on the back cover read: 'Figured on a box-car basis, the monthly output of our Refinery at Lawrenceville, Ill., represents shipments of five thousand car loads. / Some of the oil-wells owned by the Indian Refining Company. We run from twelve thousand to fifteen thousand barrels of high-grade crude oil every day. / Some of the twelve hundred modern tank cars owned by the Indian Refining Company.' Inside the front cover there is a table comparing the characteristics of oils, 'This Tells the Story of Why You Should Use Havoline Oil'. On the first page there is an extensively labeled drawing of an automobile chassis 'Showing where and when to use Havoline Oils and Greases'. On the last page: 'Description of Havoline Oils'. Inside the rear cover: 'Description of Havoline Greases'. 'All Havoline Oils are put up in handsomely lithographed one gallon sealed cans with pouring spout.' Maps pp. 3-20. President Wilson's Address to Congress Calling for Action, pp. 21-24. Photo illustrations: A Bear Mascot on the U.S. Superdreadnought Texas; Launching U.S. Superdreadnought Arizona at Brooklyn Navy Yard; Six 14-Inch Guns on The U.S. Superdreadnought Pennsylvania; The U.S. Submarine G-4; U.S. Marines in Heavy Marching Equipment; U.S.S. New York Superdreadnought; U.S. Superdreadnought Wyoming Firing Her Monstrous 12-Inch Guns. (3214044). F. Soft cover.
