About This Item
Johnson & Warner, Philadelphia, 1808. 19th Ed. Hardcover (Full Leather). Good+ Condition. Book vi, [648] p. incl. tables. 21 cm. Schrevel, a 17th century Dutch scholar, put together this Greek-Latin and Latin-Greek lexicon, which became the standard academic lexicon into the early 19th century, passing through many editions Early American imprints, Second series, no. 16153 This is the first American edition, co-published with Isaiah Thomas. Size: 8"-9" - Octavo (8vo). Item Type: Book. The text block is tight. Full leather binding with a red label reading "Schrevelii | Lexicon" in gilt on the spine. There is heavy wear at the edges and the tips of the bottom corners are worn through to the boards. Endpapers are browned from the glue; the text is moderately foxed throughout. The original owner, George Augustus Shryock, appears to have been a school boy who was not shy about writing his name on the title page (five times), as well as the top of at least two other pages, with the date 1812 in two places. There is also, in what appears to be in Shryock's hand, the name "David Denny | Teacher of the accadi" on the title page. A later owner, James Dunlap, signed his name on a blank page and the label for "Drs. A. & C.W. Lunlap's Library, Springfield, Ohio" is on the facing verso of the free front end paper. The top page edges are slightly gray from exposure. The side and bottom page edges have a small bit of spotting. There is a discrete single-line historical society stamp at the top of the inside front cover, a catalog number written in pencil on the verso of the free font endpaper and a call number label at the foot of the spine.
