"Friend of Samuel Johnson, professor of poetry at Oxford University, and later England's Poet Laureate - is best rembered for his three volume 'History of English Poetry'. He was also a historian, biographer, editor, classical scholar, humourist, and Gothic enthusiast." The volume includes all extant letters by or to Wharton. Included among the 109 correspondents are Samuel Johnson, James Boswell, David Garrick, Thomas Gray, Horace Walpole, and Irish scholar Edmond Malone. Contains information relating to the early days of Shakespearean scholarship, and reveals fresh information about literary forgeries created by Thomas Chatterton.
