About This Item

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1959. A clean, square, tight copy. Dust Jacket is not price clipped (3.50). Laid-in is a printed postcard from the publisher asking readers to provide comments on the book. This novel is based on the notorious Hall-Mills double murder case in New Jersey. In September 1922 the Rev. Edward W. Hall and his mistress, Mrs. Eleanor Mills, were found shot to death lying side-by side in a lovers' lane near New Brunswick. In real life, Longstreet actually covered this case as a cub reporter. This is a fictionalized version of 3 days of the crime's trial from the perspective of the prosecutor. In reality, the Hall-Mills case was a national media sensation. For months, front-page articles appeared daily in the New York Times and many other papers. Initially no one was charged, but four years later, in 1926, authorities reopened the case. Hall's widow and her two brothers were arrested and charged with the murders. Their trial was held in Somerville, N.J. and it was spectacular. The media again went ballistic. From July to December 1926, The New York Times alone ran almost 100 front-page reports. . First Printing (so stated). Hard Cover. Near Fine condition/VG Jacket (1 tiny edge chip). Illus. by Bacon, Paul (jacket design). 8vo. (ix), 243pp.
