About This Item
London: Longman, Green, Longman and Roberts, 1861. Leather. Very Good. 7.5" by 5.5". None. A collection of the acclaimed essays of Thomas Babington Macaulay, originally printed in The Edinburgh Review. Containing essays on Milton, Boswell's Life of Johnson, Lord Bacon and many others. Macaulay's political writings are famous for their ringing prose and for their confident, sometimes dogmatic, emphasis on a progressive model of British history, according to which the country threw off superstition, autocracy and confusion to create a balanced constitution and a forward-looking culture combined with freedom of belief and expression. This model of human progress has been called the Whig interpretation of history. Complete in two volumes. In half-morocco bindings with marbled boards. Externally, smart, with just some slight fading and rubbing. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with some scattered instances of spotting. Very Good
