About This Item

Omaha: Overland Publishing Co, 1881. First Edition. First printing. Quarto (27cm). Red paper over boards, stamped in gilt and blind; plain endpapers printed with advertisements; [vi],[23]-183,[1]pp; additional advertisements at rear; folding hand-colored map (detached but present), frontispiece, extensive black and white wood engravings, with folding hand-colored map. Solid but rubbed at edges, with chips at head and tail, internally uniformly toned, folding map neatly detached, with chip to one margin, else whole: Very Good.

Extensive traveler's guide to Colorado, including railway information, details of sites and scenes, "nearly one hundred illustrations, and the best map of Colorado ever published" (preface). The notable map by Louis Nell ("Nell's New Topographical and Township Map of Colorado") also includes a view of Leadville, CO, and a railway travel scene on the verso. The "artotype" forntispiece (likely a collotype) depicts 12 "Belles of Colorado," one of them Native American. Though the title page states "Vol. I," this single volume is complete as originally issued; no additional volumes were published until 1885. [62370].
