About This Item
1944 Little, Brown first edition, third printing. Inscribed by Maltz to Sholem Asch on the front free endpaper.
The novel is a contemporary story of wartime civilian resistance in Nazi Germany. It was highly successful upon publication, and widely distributed to members of the US Armed Forces.
Maltz was a person of strong personal convictions. As a member of the US Communist Party, Maltz generated some controversy within the Party by criticizing members for placing political concerns above their artistic integrity. At the same time, he refused to participate in the dragnet being conducted by the House Un-American Activities Committee. The context of Maltz' personal and professional life make his inscription to Asch quite illuminating. "To Sholem Asch, with deep respect for what he is as an author and man."
Condition of the book is Good only. The binding is sound. Inside pages are complete. The book shows moderate wear from age and storage. There is moderate foxing to the exterior fore edge of the text block, and lighter foxing to preliminary and ending leaves. Interior leaves are predominantly free from foxing. See the listing photos.
Condition of the dust jacket is Very Good Minus. The DJ is complete, not price clipped. It shows light shelf wear. The DJ flaps also show some light foxing. The DJ is protected in a new mylar cover.
