About This Item
London: Cassell, 1958. First edition. Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. 9" by 5.5". Not Stated. Vivian Fuchs's account of the Commonwealth Trans-Atlantic expedition, a lovely first edition complete with its unclipped dust wrapper. A remarkable account, recounting of the Commonwealth Trans-Atlantic Expedition of 1955 to 1958, the first to successfully complete the overland crossing of Antarctica via the South Pole. The reaching of the South Pole overland was only accomplished forty-six years before, with the Amundsen's expedition and Scott's expedition of 1911 and 1912. Lead by Vivian Fuchs with Sir Edmund Hilary leading the New Zealand Ross Sea Support team, both authors of this volume. The first edition of this work. Illustrated with thirty full page coloured plates and sixty three full page plates in black and white of original photographs, with nine maps in text. Collated and complete. Enclosed in the original dust wrapper. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with just some light shelf wear and a few marks to the boards. Original price-clipped dust wrapper is slightly sunned to the spine, and has some light edgewear. A few spots to the interior of the wrap. Internally, front hinge is lightly strained, remaining binding is firm. A few spots to the pages, which are otherwise bright and clean. Very Good
