About This Item

New-York: D. Appleton, 1831. 1st edition of the first book published by Appleton. [Welsh, 4865.] A selection of Bible verses for inspiration and reflection. 192 pp. 64mo miniature, 2¾ by 2¼ inches. Bound in smooth brown cloth. Good with moderate wear. Remnants of the paper spine label. Text pages with expected toning and foxing. Blank endpapers lacking but otherwise complete and securely bound. A sound example of this scarce miniature, a notable book in American publishing history. D. Appleton & Co., was founded by dry goods merchant Daniel Appleton (1785-1849) and continued as a prominent publisher for more than a century. As the first title issued from its press, this book was already sufficiently scarce by the late 19th century that Appleton did not own a copy and had to advertise nationally to find one. A copy turned up in Maryland, and its owner exchanged her little volume for the largest book then published by Appleton. In 1902, Publisher's Weekly said "not more than six" copies were known to exist. No institutional copies located by WorldCat.
