Buenos Aires: Ediciones Peuser, 1958. 10th Edition . Very Good/Very Good. 6.25 x 9 inches (16 x 23 cm). Signed by Author. Dust jacket: Slight wear to ends of spine, small hole to rear cover. Preserved in a removable jacket protector. Overall jacket condition is Very Good. Book: Illustrated paper covered boards. Slight rubbing to board edges. Foxing to page edges, clean text throughout. Spanish langauge. Inscribed and signed by the author to verso of half title page (dated May 1959). Numerous other signatures to versos of front free endpaper, half title, and title page. These were added by the officers of the Argentine Icebreaker ARA General San Martin during a 1977 courtesy visit to the British Antarctic Survey station 'F', British Faraday Station - Argentine Islands (transferred to Ukraine in 1996 and now known as Vernadsky Research Base.) Signatories include Rear Admiral Jorge A. Fraga (also an Antarctic author) and Alberto Padilla, commanding officer of the San Martin. A rare signed copy of Moneta's account of four winters spent on the South Orkney Islands between 1923 and 1929. To date this remains the only published work on life the South Orkneys. From the private collection of Eric Kenneth Prentice 'Kenn' Back, meteorologist who worked with the British Antarctic Survey for nearly 40 years, recipient of both the Fuchs Medal and the Polar Medal, and a descendent of Sir George Back, the Arctic explorer. With Back's bookplate to verso of front free endpaper. Kenn Back co-authored the first English translation of this work, issued as 'Four Antarctic Years in the South Orkney Islands. An Annotated Translation of Cuatro Anos en las Orcadas del Sur' in 2017. For his research Back assembled a collection of all Spanish editions of this work, we also have most of these still in stock.
