About This Item

London: J. Nicholson; J. & B. Spring; T Childe, 1715. First edition. Leather. Good Only. 7.5" by 5". None. Professor Ludivicus Prateus provides a gloss on the ancient poetry of Juvenal in this first edition. Published in Latin. Professor Ludivicus Prateus provides a gloss on the ancient poetry of Decimus Junius Juvenalis, known in English as Juvenal. Published in Latin. In the late first and early second century BCE Juvenal authored a collection of satirical poems known as the satires that have become a vital source for the study of ancient Rome. The satires are reproduced here, with explanatory notes and interpretations by Prateus. Several prior owners have inscribed their name in ink to the recto of the front endpaper. Including 'M. Meredith' in 1732, 'Thomas Postlethwaite', from Cambridge university in 1802, Kenneth Howard from Manchester Grammar in 1937, and Roland H. Howard from Oxford University in 1939. In a full leather binding. Externally, a little worn as the volume is lacking the front board. The rear joint is beginning to crack, particularly near the head and tail of the spine. The spine is missing a slither to the head and tail. With a little wear to the extremities. The rear hinge is starting, and is a little tender. Internally, generally firmly bound, although the first few pages are a little loose. After the first few pages, pages are bright with the occasional patch of light foxing. Good Only
