About This Item
The propaganda book about first Russian expedition to Wrangel island realized on ice-breaker Red October under Boris Davydov's command from July to October 1924. Reason for the expedition was a colony of US and Canada citizens on the island which established in 1921 and expanded in 1923. Soviet authorities had an ambition of the to restore the state sovereignty. During expedition on the island the Soviet colors were hoisted, settlers are taken out to Vladivostok. Besides, during expedition by polar explorers hydrological, geodetic and geophysical researches were conducted.
Boris Davydov (1884-1925) – Russian sea explorer, participated in Arctic hydrographic expedition on the ship Taimyr of Boris Vilkitsky. Davydov hoisted Soviet colors over Wrangel island in 1924. He died shortly after arriving to Vladivostok.
The book is rather propaganda and wrote with patriotic words, than scientific. It had to terminate the international disputes about Wrangel island.
Viacheslav Zof (1889-1937) – was commander-in-chief of the naval forces of the Soviet Republic in the time of expedition. He was sentenced to death in the time of Great Purge.
