Volume II - pp.454,. title page, List of Illustrations, (18), 2 page Contents, Both volumes include all Smith's points, and were published on November 22, 1850. 4 days after the Burgess edition which Smith considers to be first "American".editian. Because of the absence af copyright regulations, American editions were published almost simutaneusly by several publishers.
Condition: Because they contain some signatures with the binding holes from the monthly parts, this edition can be called a first bound volume. The first edition was published in parts and the bound volumes was covered in cloth so its likely that these volumes were rebound in mid 19th century style of half leather and marbled paper ahortly after issue.. Both volumes were rebacked with dark bue Morocco and titled in contemporay style. The boards of Volume II were missing and replaced with 19th centurary boards covered in a compatible period Nonpareil pattern marble paper from contemporary volumes. A very attractive set.
