Bates's short stories with illustrations and in the original dust wrapper. First edition of The Day of the Tortoise by H. E. Bates in the original publisher's cloth binding and unclipped dust wrapper. Illustrated throughout the text in black and white, and in colour to the title page, by Peter Farmer, British book illustrator and theatre artist.This is a lovely first edition copy of this short story. Herbert Ernest Bates CBE was an English write, best known for Love for Lydia and My Uncle Silas. He was a prolific writer and this is one of his many short stories. Prior owner's book plate and ink inscription from 1965 to the first pastedown. From the library of John Anderson. In the original publisher's cloth binding and unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, very smart. There is some light bumping to the head and tail of the spine. To the dust wrapper, there are a couple of very small tears. There is some slight spotting to the fore edge. Prior owner's book plate and ink inscription from 1965 to the first pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. Near Fine
