A book of The Library of Medieval Civilization, Edited by Joan Evans and Professor Christopher Brooke. 109 illustrations, 16 in color. Slight corner edgewear, very clean and unmarked. Boase is a former Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University and the author of many books, including Kingdoms and Strongholds of the Crusadres and editor of the Oxford History of English Art. In this book, Prof Boase deals with death-very real and everywhere, in the Middle Ages, public and brutal. He examines the grim reality of death: in battle, by execution, and by the plague. Then he describes burial customs, with the exquisite tombs, monuments, and chantry chapels that are silent witness to the lavish ceremonies and pageantry of the middle ages. Many masterpieces of medieval art sprang from this preoccupatin with death and depict its horror in grisly detail. 144 pages with Notes on the Text, Bibliography, List of Illustrations, and Index. 8.25 x 6 inches. McGraw Hill, New York, 1972.
