Weinert served as a historian at Fort Monroe for nearly a quarter century. This is a revised and updated edition of Rev. ed. of History of Fort Monroe by Robert Arthur that was published in 1930. Fort Monroe, Virginia has been a major post of the United States Army for over 166 years. During the Civil War, it was a base of operations for expeditions against Confederate coastal areas and also for McClellan's Peninsular Campaign of 1862 against Richmond. The historic battle of the ironclads Monitor and Virginia took place in its adjoining waters. This historic post was also the headquarters of one of the largest harbor defense commands in the country. Fort Monroe is the headquarters of the U. S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. Fort Monroe, Virginia, has been a major post of the United States Army for over 166 years. The largest permanent seacoast fortification constructed before the Civil War, Fort Monroe witnessed the birth of Army professional service schools with the establishment of the Artillery School of Practice in 1824. During the Civil War, the Fort was a base of operations not only for expeditions against the Confederate coastal areas.
