About This Item

Toronto: S. J. Reginald Saunders and Company Ltd., 1955. First Canadian Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. The Stafford Little Lectures at Princeton University, 1955. Lester B. Pearson had a long and distinguished career: teacher, Canadian Ambassador to the US, President of the UN general Assembly, fourteenth Prime Minister of Canada. Pearson is perhaps most noted internationally for his pivot role in preventing the Suez Crisis (1956) from plunging the world into another war. For this Mr. Pearson was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. It is interesting that this lecture was given the year prior to this crisis. From the DJ flap: "Combing far-seeing idealism with the active statesman's hard-headed realism, Mr. Pearson considers the new scale of armed force in atomic warfare, international coalitions, the mediating role of the United Nations (my italics), the question of secret versus open diplomacy, and the international and internal forces that influence the policies of Western Nations." A near fine book in an edge worn and rubbed dust jacket.
