NOTES ON THE PORO IN LIBERIA and MASKS AS AGENTS OF SOCIAL CONTROL IN NORTHEAST LIBERIA. by George W. Harley
(Hardcover)
Ethnos Publications, 2001
These two seminal studies by Dr. George Way Harley are the basis of our present day knowledge of the Poro men's secret society of West Africa and of masks and masking traditions in Liberia. Harley, a physician, traveled to Liberia from Durham, N.C., in 1926, cutting his way through the bush when there were no roads. He established a clinic at Ganta in Mano country near the Guinea border, and ministered to the needs of the people in the region for over three decades. Because of the trust placed in him by Poro secret society initiates, and through his anthropological training at Harvard, he slowly accumulated an immense knowledge and deep insight into the otherwise impenetrable secrets of the Poro.
Nearly impossible to find in their original, these classic works are presented together in this facsimile reprint. The two papers have been bound together… Read More

[Honolulu or San Francisco]: NP, 1923. First Edition, First Printing. Green wraps, with title and rules printed in black. Very Good+. 8vo. Pp. 100. A particularly fresh copy, with slight closed tears (1") at front cover hinge at head and tail. Please see photos. Amid "excitement caused by this gold fever, and the frantic preparations made to get there, and get there quick," Fraser departed San Francisco for Skagway on the S.S. Queen in early January, 1898. "The fever was in the air. The general salutation when you met an acquaintance was, 'Are you going to the Klondike?'." Includes an anecdote about "confidence men of Seattle" -- "Seattle was Klondike crazy. More so, if possible, than San Francisco." Contains two pages on scurvy. As an accurate journalist living in San Francisco, Fraser was cautious about overstating the palpable West Coast hullabaloo generated by the discovery of Yukon gold. The Arctic Bibliography, Ricks and Smith indicate Honolulu as place of publication; Wickersham lists San…

Description:
Stated first edition of this wildly popular and seminal work which sold over a million copies and remained no. 1 on the Times bestseller list for months. The pages are in near new condition. The only flaw I could find was that a previous owner (presumably) printed "John Irving " at the top of the first fly leaf. The cover and spine are in excellent condition except for some light shelf wear at the top and bottom of the spine, also at the tip of the upper corner of the front cover and an air bubble crease on the inside front cover..The back page of the dust jacket is missing. Remaining Dj has some minor tears around edges. It is un-clipped, showing the $12.50 price. There is also a cardboard bookmark from a bookstore in Burlington Vermont.
