The life of one of the greatest British women of the 19th century, Gertrude Bell, 1868-1926. Ms Bell eschewed the life of a Victorian woman in the England of the time and went to explore, map and excavate the world of the Arabs. She was contemporary with Lawrence of Arabia and provided "--brains to match Lawrence's brawn". After the war, she played a major role in creating the modern Middle East and was considered the most powerful woman in the British Empire. And Wallach shows the woman behind her achievements. 419 pages with Epilogue, End Notes, Bibliography and Index. 9.25 x 6.2 inches. 1999, Anchor Books/Doubleday, USA
