Just a hint of shelf/edge wear to stiff beige card-stock covers. The J. L. Hudson Company (commonly known simply as Hudson's) was an upscale retail department store chain based in Detroit, Michigan. Hudson's flagship store, on Woodward Avenue in Downtown Detroit was the tallest department store in the world in 1961,and, at one time, claimed to be the second-largest department store, after Macy's, in the United States, by square footage. Wonderful history book celebrating Detroit's 250th Anniversary (and Hudson's 70th Year in Business) with 26 historical articles (of famous Detroit Citizens) written by Dr. Milo M. Quaife. The builders of Detroit are: 1) Antoine de Lamonthe Cadillac--1658-1730, 2) Marie Therese Cadillac--1671-death unknown, 3) Henry Gladwin--1729-1791, 4) Gabriel Richard--1767-1832, 5) Judge Augustus B. Woodward--1774-1827, 6) Lewis Cass--1782-1866, 7) Stevens Thomson Mason--1811-1843, 8) William Woodridge--1780-1861, 9) Douglas Houghton--1809-1845, 10) Mrs. Nancy Martin--1799-1875, 11) James F. Joy--1810-1896, 12) George H. Hammond--1838-1886, 13) Hervey C. Parke--1827-1899, 14) James A. Randall-1847-1911, 15) Hazen S. Pingree-1840-1901, 16) Russell A. Alger-1836-1907, 17) Clarence Monroe Burton--1853-1932, 18) Thomas W. Palmer--1830-1913, 19) Albert Kahn--1869-1942, 20) James Couzens--1872-1936, 21) Henry Ford--1863-1947, 22) Walter P. Chrysler--1875-1940, 23) William S. Knudsen--1879-1948, 24) Emma A. Fox--1847-1945, 25) Frank Cody--1870-1948, and 26) Joseph L. Hudson--1846-1912. In 1952, one year after this booklet was printed, Hudson's total sales were $175 million but issued refunds totaling $25 million. Store executives felt that to be a small price to pay for customer loyalty. They continued to survive 32 more years, and in 1983, the Downtown store closed.A superb copy, seldom seen in this nice a condition and Very Scarce. LOC SSE-02
