Page 315/16, recto with large illustration of Iberide (Iberis plant), fine impression, verso is text, minor edge wear to outer margins, tiny bit of worming at corners, no real affect, suitable for framing. 9.75 x 14.5 inches. Ibiris [aka candytuft] little used in herbalism can be used medicinally for poor digestion as well as arthritis. Pietro Andrea Mattioli (1501-1577), Italian doctor and the most successful botanical writer in sixteenth-century-Europe. His masterpiece was his translation and commentary of the Greek botanist Dioscorides, that he constantly emended keeping it up to date with new medical plants and numerous detailed woodcuts. Our print is from the first major edition of the Grand Mattioli edited by Valgrisi, considered one of the most accurate and last edited directly by the author. Illustrations designed by Giorgio Liberale of Udine.
