About This Item
Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1857. Hardcover. Very Good. 24mo. in navy blue blindstamped cloth. spine lettered and decorated in gilt. All edges gilt. Frontispiece engraving "Beatrice Cenci". Very good, shallow wear at the spine extremities, light wear at the tips. 1857 gift tinscription on the first front blank. Anna Murphy Brownwell Jameson (1794-1860) worked as a teenager as governess to the family of the Marquess of Winchester. She travelled with a young student to Italy and produced this narrative by a ficticious person. It was first published in 1826 when she arranged a deal with a printer by which she would receive a guitar if the book made a profit; it did, as it was very well received at the time (no record as to wheter or not she got the guitar).
