About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1950. First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author opposite the title page: "To Margaret Payne with my best wishes Marcia Brown". Brown (1918-2015) was a writer and illustrator of more than 30 children's books and won three Caldecott medals. This version of Dick Whittington and His Cat was also a finalist for the medal. Loosely inserted is a letter dated 7 June 1967 from "Roger" of William Heinemann addressed to Payne, thanking her for lending himthe book and expressing his opinions on the work, claiming it could lead to "an alternative and new version, which I must say, I should love to do". Payne was a librarian at the central library in Sutton. Quarto. Original yellow boards ("Scribner's library binding"), spine and front cover lettered in black, front cover illustrated in black and white, publishers emblem to rear cover in black, dark red endpapers, cloth reinforcement at inner hinges, as issued. With illustrated dust jacket replicating cloth design with publisher ticket to spine. Black and yellow linocuts by Marcia Brown throughout. Slight bumping to spine ends, foxing to top edge; jacket with light foxing, nicks to fold ends, flaps without price as issued, short closed tear to head of front panel: a very good copy in like jacket.
