About This Item

Illustrated throughout, with hundreds of black and white photographic vignettes. Sixteen colour plates to volume I, twelve colour plates to volume II and twelve to volume III. Collated, complete. The second and revised edition. This work was originally published in 1927. This work aims to be a guide and explanation to the development and design of English furniture. The work starts at the Middle Ages and ends in the late Georgian period. Furnishings discussed to these volumes include, but are not limited to, picture frames, shelves, cabinets, chairs and clocks. This work was a collaboration between Percy Macquoid and Ralph Edwards. Macquoid was a theatrical designer as well as a collector and connoisseur of English furniture. He wrote many articles and several books for Country Life. Full red cloth bindings and held in original unclipped dustwrappers. Externally, all volumes are very smart with minor bumping to the head and tail of spines with a few handling marks. Dustwrapper to volume I is generally smart with rubbing and bumping to the joints and extremities. Minor chipping to the tail of spine. Loss to the dustwrapper at head of spine and a small closed tear at the tail. Tape repairs and reinforcement at the joints as well as the top and bottom edges to dustwrapper internally. Dustwrapper to volume II is sound with slight rubbing at the joints and extremities. Small amount of chipping to the top and bottom edges as well as loss to the head and tail of spine. Tape repairs internally to wrap and externally at the head. Dustwrapper to volume III has suffered severe loss to the rear board at the bottom. Otherwise, heavy rubbing to joints and extremities with a small loss at head of spine. Minor chipping to top and bottom edges of third volume's dustwrapper. Tape repairs to internals of third dustwrapper as well. Small spots to the internal of third dustwrapper. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean throughout. Near Fine
