About This Item

London: J. Nourse; W. Strahan; J.F. and C. Rivington et. al. , 1778. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 11" by 8.5". Not Stated. Joseph Baretti's successful Italian to English dictionary, complete in two volumes and handsomely bound in full contemporary calf. An vast and important English to Italian dictionary, with supplemental pronunciation, grammar, and definitions for thousands of English/Italian equivalents. Written by Joseph Baretti, as he was known in England (in his home country of Italy, his name was Giuseppe Marc'Antonio Baretti). This dictionary was largely inspired by Baretti's acquaintance and fellow lexicographer, Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language. Complete in two volumes. A new edition of this work, originally published in 1760. This edition has been improved and augmented, with above ten thousand words omitted in the previous editions. Containing a previous owner's small ink signature to the front free-endpaper of each volume, dated 1782. ESTC Citation No. T83922 Signature: a1-e1, B1-4U1; a1-e4, A1-4Q2  In full contemporary calf binding. Externally, very smart, with just a touch of rubbing and shelf wear, and a few marks to the front board of Volume II. Containing a previous owner's small ink signature to the front free-endpaper of each volume, dated 1782. Internally, front hinges strained to each volume. Remaining binding is firm. A small amount of worming from the front free-endpaper to page viii in Volume II. A few spots to the first and last few pages, which are otherwise bright and clean. Very Good Indeed
