About This Item
London: W. Innys; J. Brotherton; R. Ware; et al., 1756. Leather. Good Only. 10.5" by 8". Not Stated. A mid-18th century French and English dictionary in two parts, by well-known lexicographer Abel Boyer. The 1756 edition of this work in a full calf binding. Ink inscription to the front free end paper. Abel Boyer (c1667-1729) was a French-English lexicographer, journalist and writer. In 1699, he first published his best-known work The Royal Dictionary, "In two parts. First, French and English. Secondly, English and French". He later produced an abridged version and one titled in French, like this one. Boyer's dictionary was superior to every previous work of this kind, and has been the basis for many subsequent French-English dictionaries. This French and English dictionary contains two parts: one French to English, and the other English to French. With a dissertation on French prosody by Mr de la S. R. Lacking title page to the second part and 40 pages to the second part. In a full calf binding. Externally sound, with marks to the boards and rubbing to the extremities. Hinges are starting but remain firm. Internally, firmly bound. Front paste down is somewhat abraded. Ink stains to the title page, not obscuring the text. Damp stains to several pages, not obscuring the text. Repair to page titled 'Liste Alphabetique' starting the second part, not affecting the text. Insect damage to pages 27 to 78 and pages 131 to 158 of the second part, which obscures some of the text. The rest of the pages are clean with light age toning, usual for its age. Lacking title page to second part, 32 pages to the start of the second part, and 8 pages to the rear. Good Only
