First published 1946 in French. Analysis of political instutition following the French Revolution by French historian Georges Lefebvre (1874 - 1959). Directory (Directoire), the Revolutionary government set up by the Constitution lasted four years --- November 1795 to November 1799. In hindsight a system too weak in executive powers and short on measures to insure discipline. Short lifed, it gave way to the strong-armed dictictatorship of Napoleon Bonaparte.
