An early English edition of Thomas Mann's ingenius treatment of the Faust legend, complete with a superior dust wrapper. First published in Germany in 1947, this is a philosophical novel following the fictitious composer Adrian Leverkuhn, who in his quest for greatness contracts syphilis intentionally to further his musical genius. His life is set during the context of Nazi Germany in the run up to its downfall. The work is based upon the Faust legend.Thomas Mann was a German short story writer, novelist, essayist and social critic. He received the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929; he fled from Germany upon Adolf Hitler's rising to power in 1933, and became renowned for his 'Exilliteratur', German literature written by those exiled during the Nazi regime for their views.The first English edition, second impression.Complete with an excellent unclipped dust wrapper. In the publisher's original full cloth binding with an unclipped dust wrapper. Externally very smart, with just a touch of minor wear to the edges. Dust wrapper is sunned to the spine, with a small closed tear to the head of the front board and slight chipping to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
