Joseph Henry (1797-1878), one of the founding fathers of electrical technology, was the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. In this paper he responds to Faraday's confirmation of Henry's earlier discovery relating to electricity by describing further experiments he had carried out after moving to Princeton. Very scarce. In Very Good Condition: disbound from a larger volume; 1-cm. closed tear from gutter in each leaf; chip out along gutter of first leaf; clean and bright.

[Olympia, WA], 1935. Silver gelatin composite photograph (250 x 200 mm) with small tear-off monthly calendar for 1936. Inscribed "Merry Christmas, The Bowmans". A few minor nicks and spots at the edges. Excellent, unused condition. A remarkable piece of early aviation ephemera, this calendar was produced as a Christmas greeting by the early female aviator Marguerite (Martie) Bowman (1901-1985) and her husband Leslie, also a pilot. It depicts Bowman flying in her WACO INF biplane, registration number NC625Y, in formation with two others, and includes portraits of Bowman, her husband, and their daughter Larnie Bowman Allen. We have learned from one of the Bowmans' grandchildren that Larnie joined the family profession, becoming a wing-walker at eight and soloing at twelve. The Bowmans established an aviation business together and, during the 1920s, 30s and 40s, Martie Bowman ferried planes from factories and regularly participated in air races. Samuel Frederck Gray, the author of "The Operative Chemist" (1828) wrote on medicine, pharmacy and botany. Arthur Livermore Porter was Professor of Chemistry at the University of Vermont. With a great deal on the processing of ores and metals, on distilleries, and on heating and lighting. Ex-library, minimal markings, foxed; spine and boards detached. Pages x and 397, and plate 39 are torn. As is needs rebinding. Scarce.

Tight in possibly contemporary binding with later? title label: "Medical Topography, 1830", previous owner's name and one line comment on FEP. 2 or 3 pages with some red pencil underlining, one printer's ink stain and two pages with small repaired tears.
