About This Item
Broadsides. Very Good Condition. 2 broadsides and a physician circular for M'Munn's (sometimes Mc Munn's) products. His opium elixir was advertised as having "all the valuable medicinal properties of Opium, to the exclusions of those which are deleterious and useless. ca. 8" x 13" with testimonials at the bottom. Developed in the 1830s and marketed aggressively starting in the 1840s, M'Munn's elixir was a popular and controversialk product that claimed to remove the narcotic properties of opium and make it safe for children (with some predictably terrible results).
WIth a ca. 8"x 14" broadside for McMunn's Lubricating Compound for "railroad cards, steam engines, & machinery of all kinds". Not content with getting into the opium business, McMunn also made a lubricant which he patented in 1860. It was made by "combining oil with various ingredients" Extensive testimonials. Chipping with a little loss at edges. Extensive manuscript notes on verso regarding the efficacy of his sulphate of quinine.
3 copies of an introductory broadsheet to the elixir dated 1837, one copy of the Lubricating broadsheet (at the AAS),
With a 2pp 9.5" x 7" physician circular talking up McMunn's Kinate of Quinine and Cinchonine dated December 22, 1862. A "preparation of Peruvian bark" that avoid the "buzzing or ringing in the ears, deafness, blindness, etc." of similar tonics. He mentions the success of his opium elixir. Chipping and a tear apparently from worming but no affecting text.
A really nice group from one of the most successful 19th century quack medicine practitioners. Size: Octavo (8vo). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Americana; Inventory No: 048157.
